Seiko 6106-7440
The 6106-7440 is a Seiko 5 Actus SS from Suwa, made from 1969 for the Japanese market, in a wide cushion case. The dial in these photographs reads SEIKO 5 ACTUS, SS and 25 JEWELS over the Suwa mark, with faceted applied batons, a double index at 12, a framed day-date at 3 with a kanji day wheel, and a printed minute track on the outer ring. SS stands for Second Setting: the 25-jewel 6106 automatic hacks but does not hand-wind, and runs at 21,600 bph. The submitter dates this example to November 1969 and says the bracelet is original.

What does the "SS" on the dial mean?
It stands for "Second Setting," Seiko's period term for a hacking mechanism that stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out, allowing for precise time setting.
How do I change the day and date on the 6106 caliber?
The crown has two positions, home and pulled out for the time. With it home, press it in to advance the date. On the 6106C, the version with a bilingual day wheel, a firmer push advances the day as well; earlier 6106A movements quickset the date only, and the day is moved by running the hands through midnight. Try both on any example you are buying, because a worn quickset is cheaper to find out about before the sale than after.
