Golden Age1960-69

Grand Seiko arrived in 1960 as Suwa’s answer to the question of how good a Japanese watch could be. Daini answered back with King Seiko, and the two factories spent the decade competing openly, until Seiko movements were placing at the top of the Swiss chronometer trials.

The same ten years produced Japan’s first diver, the 62MAS of 1965, the timing of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 6139 among the world’s first automatic chronographs, and, in December 1969, the quartz Astron. Most of what collectors chase in vintage Seiko traces back to this decade.
